Turning Japanese

Japanese cinema isn’t just about lank-haired ladies climbing out yer gogglebox, y’know.

It’s also about bonkers ultra-violence, men in monster suits and robots destroying buildings with their giant winkies.

If you’re a fan of all the above (and, hey, who isn’t?), you should get down to the Exeter Phoenix this Friday for the appropriately named Japanese Cinema Day.

Top boffin Kate E Taylor from the University of Exeter, will be on hand in the Media Centre Black Box (you just walk right in, walk-walk-walk right in, etc after paying the £10 or £6 entrance fee) to find out what makes Japanese cinema so fab.

Starting with the sublime Yasujiro Ozu and finishing with the ridiculous Takashi Miike, she will also look at the estimable likes of Honda, Oshima and surprise Kurusawa.

There will be oodles of time for questions and chin stroking, plus a beezer course pack will be provided with further reading and director filmographies.

Free stuff is great, but if they offer you a video to watch, you should probably politely decline. Just in case, like.

Forget the Palm d’Or from Cannes. Put aside Sundance, and Venice, and even Berlin, the Ten By Ten film festival is coming and the closing date is just around the corner.

Only for short films made by student or non professional film makers, the latest your film can be submitted is March 14. So get that thing sent, or start shooting, whichever is most applicable.

The screening will take palce at the Exeter Picturehouse at 8pm Tuesday, April 11.

For more information visit the Ten By Ten website.
