Motion pictures

We’ve not really mentioned anything about it so far, but we at the People’s Republic are proper psyched about the forthcoming Motionplymouth event, which was launched this week.

Brought to you by the ever-busy Motiongrafik and Kaos Production, the shindig will see Plymouth’s city centre lit up with building projections, digital media beams and light installations. Coo!
It’s so hi-tech, plans to project Jim Carrey’s seminal classic Dumb And Dumber onto the surface of the moon are surely only days away. Yes, welcome to the future, you puny Earthlings.

The whole thing has been timed to coincide with the Christmas lights switch-on, putting the wind up crowds who traditionally mill around the city centre stuffing their faces with mince pies.

And there’s good news for filmmakers in the People’s Republic too - the Motionplymouth bods are after your cacky efforts. Really? Yes.

They want to find movies, no longer than three minutes, in a range of categories including wildlife, music, changing Plymouth or mobile phone films.

A selection of the competition’s highlights will be screened during the Motionplymouth event - so it’s probably best you don’t submit that film of your friend doing a really long poo.

Motionplymouth is planned for November 16 and 17.

Food of the Gods

Some call it Brown Gold, other less dillusional people call it chocolate, so if you’re into that stuff of cocoa legend, put down that salmonella-ridden bar and listen up.

The merits of fair trade, organic and at times freaky flavoured chocolate will be put up for all to see for four days at Occombe Farm from Thursday.

The conservation charity people at the Torbay Countryside Trust have put together a smorgasbord of taste sensations including dairy free chocolate spreads, chilli chocolate, organic and gluten, drinking, chocolate apples, and even braised venison with chocolate Yorkshire pudding (yeah, I can see that one going down well past the Pennines).

Apparently the Cocoa Tree and Feed your Imagination will be offering tastings on Friday and there will be history lessons and of course you’ll be made aware of how, as a consumer, you can influence the world with the choices you make - buy local, organic and fair trade.

Sample the Food of the Gods. Admission is free.
