Waste not
August 1st, 2006
Much as we lurve recycling (oh and we do - pah to all those naysayers), we are also mindful of that dratted council tax thing that rears its head every month offering services for ever increasing sums. So it was with a little squint of scepticism that we at the republic looked at the news of possible charges for removing non-recyclable household waste.
The news (it was way back in June, so sue me) follows Sir Michael Lyons‘ investigation into council funding. And was greeted with glee by Friends of the Earth. Their reduce resource use campaigner Dr Michael Warhurst said: ‘Charging for the amount of rubbish thrown away will encourage people to start treating rubbish collection services like electricity, gas and the other utilities. Householders can then save money by cutting their waste.’
Nice one doc, much as we applaud the sentiment, haven’t you noticed how much people actually waste electricity, etc. Isn’t that the point? How about penalising companies that overuse packaging, for example.
Okay, so the Friends did call for these charging impositions to be senstive to the less well off. Worthy as all this is, maybe they should focus a little more on human nature if they want to come up with a real solution.
