Sound advice

With the new school year about to begin, parents and teachers are being warned that hard of hearing kids may be going unnoticed in the classroom and at home.

In 2000, the Government announced that every newborn baby in the UK would have a hearing test within 48 hours of birth, to be implemented by

Kolo flash

This news stumbled across our desk from Kolo

“We’re playing at The Hub again this Friday. One of the support bands for the Lorraine gig (www.myspace.com/lorrainemusic) pulled out and we’re opening now. Our set will be at about 8:15…would be great if you could make it along!”

So do like the band say and get

Healthy approach

Ever get the feeling that the death rattle of the NHS is fast approaching (despite or because of the money being spent on it)? We at the People’s Republic of South Devon are keen to keep the (at least) idea of the health service alive. So we asked Martin Rathfelder, director of the Socialist Health

Lookin’ for adventure

Like, dude. Do you use the term ‘groady‘ with a straight face? Do you sport bad shorts and a ridiculous beard?

If so, you’ll love the Nissan Adventure Film Festival at Plymouth’s Vue cinema next week.

Kolo and the gang

You’d think that with our frankly unhealthy Aeon-inspired love for David Sanders (his album really is astonishingly good), there’d be no room in our hearts for anyone else. And you’d be dead right! However, last week, we were a bit blown away by Kolo at Plymouth’s Hub venue.

(Sw)pan for gold

Who would have thought there would be a Genesis Centre, and that it would be in Somerset? We only mention it because on Thursday, September 7, there will be an exodus (you ever get those days you just feel a little Old Testament?) of artists from the People’s Republic to the South West’s Participatory Arts

Febrile Fitz # 8

Bonjour, and welcome to another peer into David ‘Fitz’ Fitzgerald’s ear – the ex-personal assistant to Gus Honeybun cum Evening Herald scribbler.

This week’s effort features an appearance by The Enemy (his wife) and is a good column for fans of Rainman-like observations on hamsters and ice cream. Coo, Fitz’s columns must pretty much write

Nine days in September, October . . .

The firsts of that South Devon spectacular Nine Days of Art are set to kick off in Teignbridge and West Devon on September 9. In Teignbridge more than 80 artists are opening up their studios, and themselves if I know artists, in more that 50 locations throughout the district until 17th.

That’s nine a day

Very poor show

Lower-cased consumer crusaders energywatch has called on suppliers to stop charging the poor more for gas and electricity.

Kids living in poverty, disabled people, older consumers and the fuel poor are apparently suffering most from the rocketing prices.

Media and communication my eye…

Urgh-hum, we applaud Exeter Fairtrade City Steering Group’s award of runner-up in the media and communication section of the Fairtrade Fortnight Awards (yes, apparently there are such things). They evidently held events across the city on almost every day of the fortnight and got articles in their local paper, the

Going aeon and aeon and aeon. . .

We’re still getting comments and we’re still getting pictures. In my book that spells success (I have a very dodgy book about spelling). These snaps are provided by Bluetungsten. If you want more get in touch.

Scary in the mist (or the fairy tales of Chagford)

We here in the People’s Republic of South Devon thought we’d get in touch with the filmmaker harpist Elizabeth-Jane Baldry. We knew she was working on her third film. The first, Woodwose, was from a Grimm fairy tale and the second, A Pottle o’ Brains – based on a local fairy tale – was the
