Dramarama-lama-ding-dong

Are there any 11-15 year olds in the People’s Republic who want to get involved in drama? Course there are – and now they bally-well can.

Roots In Drama, starting on Wednesday, November 1 at the Barbican Theatre, Plymouth, is about exploring different drama styles and techniques, looking at the link between dance and drama through movement and observing professional performances, discussing and debating what you see. Oh, and pretending you’re a tree.

The project includes five workshops which take place on every Wednesday in November from 5-7pm and a Go & See performance of Sakoba Dance Theatre, one of the country’s leading African dance combos (but then, you knew that already, dincha?), on Friday, December 1 at 7.30pm.

Roots In Drama is for 11-15 year olds of all abilities.  There are a maximum of 20 places so book now to avoid tears before bedtime.  To find out more, call 01752 267131.

Life preservative

Oxfam and Pulse Rated Radio are organisations after our own heart. The two are collaborating to provide an opportunity for local bands and raise dosh to save lives, improve conditions and generally do all that stuff that Oxfam is good at.

As part of the Oxjam - a whole load of bands playing stuff - project Supenik will be playing at Torquay Townhall on Saturday 28 at 6pm.

But you know our very own Melting Pot download will be available from the start of next month if you develop at taste for the local band live music jam.

What a waster

Here’s a surprise. According to a report released this week, Britons are the biggest energy wasters in Europe.  Well, imagine that.

However, it’s not all bad news. ICM Research, on behalf of the Energy Saving Trust, examined the country’s energy habits  and compiled a UK Energy Wasters’ League, highlighting how the various regions compare.

Turns out, people in the South West are responsible for an average of 21 energy wasting actions each week, compared to a national average of 32.

In fact, we top the Energy Wasters’ League (which sounds like a bad thing but is actually Very Good Indeed). Hooray for us.

The report goes on to add that this fantastic result is entirely attributable to the efforts of the PRSD website (not strictly true).

Sonic illusions indeed

A group of people with masks like they're in a cabaret type thing

I don’t mind saying that the guys of the triple bill that announces itself as an evening of ‘phantasmogorical symphonies and electro-spectral musical phenomena ’scare me. The three musical items are Pram, Blissbody/Mark Anderson and Project Glass. Rare, invigorating, unique, spectacular, oscillating, shimmeringly fragile, I have no doubt. But even the promise of Czech animation can’t get over the ‘creepy Victoriana’ which was mentioned in the press release. This is a special set for the south west and is on at the Exeter Phoenix on November 3 at 8.30pm. The cost to you is £10, with that falling to £8 if you have one of those cards that allow you concessions.

Mental

You ever get the feeling that the NHS would run perfectly well if it didn’t have to care for those who are ill? And one area of the NHS that is severely lacking (I was told woefully inadequate) is mental health provision in the bay area. But hey, don’t listen to this idle conjecture, check out this story from the Herald Express.

Sunday’s best

After a long lazy lie in followed by a thorough flick through of old issues of Harper’s Bazaare, Sunday can sometimes seem a little empty.Stop moping, pull on your best and head down to Torquay for the Animals in Distress fashion show at the Grand Hotel. The first steps down the cat walk will be at 7.30pm and the last at 10pm, it’s £6 in - wear as much fake fur as possible before your knees buckle.

Arthouse Roundup: Oct 20-26

Follow the main cinema links for dates, times and matinee screenings.
Follow the title links for movie details, friendship and maybe more.

PLYMOUTH ARTS CENTRE

Three Times (12A) Beautiful new flick from acclaimed director Hou Hsiao-Hsien (so good they named him thrice).
Dave Chappelle’s Block Party (15) Nothing to do with dreary indie (drindie?) from New Cross, this is actually a documentary about chirpy Chappelle’s attempts to put on a musical/comedy extravanganza in Brooklyn. Or is the whole thing just a dream in director Michel Gondry’s spotless mind…

TAVISTOCK WHARF

Stormbreaker (PG) Teenager Alex Rider decides he doesn’t want to hang out with his mates swearing and happy-slapping old folks but would rather, like, save the world. Such a nice boy.

DARTINGTON ARTS/THE BARN

Driving Lessons (15) Dodgy Britcom which follows a mugging Ron Weasley as he learns how to drive/have it orf.
Awesome; I Fuckin’ Shot That! (15) Beastie Boys fans are given a ‘license to ill’ and allowed to film the aging hip-hoppers (or should that be ‘hip-replacement hoppers’?) in concert. We’re particularly impressed by the use of a fuckin’ semi colon in the title. Fuckin’ sterling work, lads. Fuck.
Grizzly Man (15) Timmy met the bear, the bear met Timmy. The bear was bulgy,
the bulge was Timmy.
The New World (12A) Colin Farrell plays second fiddle to a bunch of trees, birds and, uh, breezes in Terrence Malick’s latest.

EXETER PICTUREHOUSE

History Boys (15) Teacher encourages lads to ditch full-time education and have lots of gay sex. Be warned though - by following that course of action you’ll inevitably end up working with us at the PRSD.
Three Times (12A) See Plymouth Arts Centre.
Unconscious (15) Charming period comedy from Joaquin Oristrell. Hey, Joaquin, there’s nuffin funny about periods, y’know. Bleugh!
Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait (PG) Arty thing about a famous footballer running around and spitting and stuff.
Red Road (18) Director Andrea Arnold’s newie was hugely acclaimed in Cannes, almost eclipsing her fantastic work in the Saturday morning kids’ show No 73.
Wot no Sandwich Quiz
?
Live Flesh (18) According to Cptn, this Almodovar classic’s title is actually pronounced ‘Blive Blesh’.
Crash (15) Set in a world where all human interaction, even conversations between mother and daughter, are coloured by racial hatred.
Donnie Darko (15) Eagerly-awaited sequel to the Jimmy Stewart comedy Harvey.

Post haste

While the rest of those moaning minnies bleat on about the pound, Johnny Foreigner and an excess of Eastern Europeans, take a moment to really think about what the European Union means, not two days after the sub post office people had their 4 million signatures and their march.

What it really means on one hand is a half-hearted increased provision of social legislation - paternity leave for example, versus the opting out of the working time directive. And then there’s the opening up for competition of all manner of things transport is one, and oh, postal services is another. I won’t go into all the gubbins as to why rural communities suffer, but suffer they do. Monetary policy is alive and kicking and beating at the heart of what should be an organisation to promote communities and diversity.

Oh, and guess which organisation I suspect is behind ID cards, too. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not anti-Europe but I am anti easy free market solutions, especially as it means loss of services and jobs.

Shucks, now where’s the punch-line? Ah yes: UKIP.

Cod piece

Hey, if you want to read an interesting thing about fish go to The Compost Heap. Honestly, who could be so knowledgeable and witty? Cod only knows.
