Pole to Pole

Now Borat can offend twice as many people with his outrageous brand of homophobic, misogynist and anti-semitic humour.

For the next week, Plymouth’s Vue Cinema is showing a special print of the chart-topping comedy subtitled in Polish to cater for the growing number of economic migrants in the city.

Apparently, it’s the first time an English film has ever been shown with foreign-language subtitles in a public cinema in Plymouth. Way to go, Plymouth!

No-one’s bothered to count the number of Poles in the city but anecdotal evidence suggests that there are large numbers – so much so, two shops selling Polish food have just opened in Union Street and North Hill.

We at the People’s Republic used to live in a flat above a Polish social club and can testify that Borat should go down a treat with the noisy old boys – especially our 85 year old ex-landlord, who is, by now, probably dead.

Kiss that baby

If the US midterms have taught us nothing else here in the People’s Republic of South Devon, it is how out of touch politicians are. Hazel Blears et al, this means you.

Viral tactics are being cited as the cause of the Democrat landslide. These used to be known as grassroots politics. But since when has politics been about people anyway? Let’s just bring it all back down to a local level - how many people know Devon County Council is Liberal Democrat-led? You can’t tell by the policies. And how many know that there need to be 10 electors to call for a local council by-election, otherwise a member could be seconded (now where’s the democracy in that?)

We owe it to ourselves to know what is going on, whether it’s viral political marketing, kissing babies on the hustings or making sure our votes count in every election, because you can rest assured that those who want to hold and keep hold of power sure as heck won’t really want to tell us.

The Democrat victory is being put down to the politcal ‘architecture’ of Howard Dean, who has been snatched up by the Labour Party to strategise its defence in the next general election. Now, there has to be some irony in that Mr Dean was working against warmongering fanaticism.
