Media studies

All the art in the Dream of Putrefaction show has one common denominator (you see what I did: faction; denominator? Oh never mind, go to the bottom of the class) – something about our relationship with mass media.

Apparently, ‘we experience an unending sequence of unfulfilled promises, as a hyperreal world of information-excess seeks to tempt us with one commodity or another.’ These guys obviously haven’t been reading the People’s Republic of South Devon.

So why mention this Folkestone show (which will be moving to London in March)? Because Plymouth-born friend to the People’s Republic Josie McCoy is being exhibited, that’s why.

Her pictures ‘incorporate cropped images of women’s heads in a blank, emptied out spaces of flatness. These images are fragments of bodies which acknowledge their source in glamour photography. Their power to seduce speaks of their own “desire for attention” as would-be icons of consumer excess, as much as a play on the viewer’s gaze.’ The minxes.

The Dream of Putrefaction is at the Metropole Galleries, Folkestone, from tomorrow until Sunday, February 25. Admission free.
