And this latest debate, on Tuesday, was all about how Christians, and others, might want to actively discriminate against gays and lesbians as long as they could hide behind religion to fire their bigotry.
Thankfully the god-squadders failed, but wasn’t this religious bunch moaning about its lifestyles choices not being taken seriously a few months ago?
As Paul Dunn, Equality South West chief executive, said before the debate: “We should not tolerate different levels of legal protection based on prejudice. This government has done more than any other in living memory to advance legal rights and protection for equality and diversity. We hope they will hold their nerve and offer the same basic legal protection to all of the people in the UK.”
Now, let’s heal the divide and join together in dancing at the Queen of Hearts Valentine’s Day bash (I don’t think they’d deny entry to anyone with a religious belief, but you’d best keep that cross under your blouse).
The last month has been dominated by the parliamentary debate about welfare reform, and it has been tempting to see this as – finally – a big and public debate about poverty.

Protests against anti-discrimination laws for Northern Ireland failed to stop the legislation, which came into effect in Northern Ireland on January 1 and is due to be implemented in the UK in April. The pro-discrimination lobby was unable to derail the laws earlier in the week.
