Caught in the act 1

400 hundred years in the making, and that’s saying something, especially for a play. But this play, Caught by Theatre Alibi – we’re reliably informed – has everything: passion, pictures and, erm, more passion and pictures.

It’s all based on the darkly brooding Caravaggio – pained torsoes in pools of light and anguish – and the theft of one of his works in Sicily in the 1960s. In 1609 the Renaissance man escaped prison to paint the Palermo Nativity, then in 1969 the Mafia quite appropriately ‘appropriated’ it to fund its underworld activities. Hmm, could be a bit of an investigation into the world’s relationship with art (stroking chin), as well as overlapping tales of love, sex and lies.
And it all sounds like a jolly good romp – thrilling, powerful and it’s Theatre Alibi (they’re quite good, we’re reliably informed). I would expect a lot of shouting.
So pop along to the Exeter Phoenix, it runs from Thursday, February 8 to February 14.
