Cast of the Plym
If you’ve stuck your toe in the water of our Melting Pot podcasts, you know what fun they be (you could even try even getting into the whirligig of fun that is internet tv). But low, we are not the only podding spot on the horizon. We tripped over the Plymcast the other day and finally plucked up enough courage to speak to the guys behind it - Mark, Gaz and Jon.
Why do you do the Plymcast and how did it get started?
Because it’s fun and keeps us off the streets! On a larger scale it’s great to help contribute towards the promotion of music in the region.
Individually we’ve dabbled in podcasts in the past but thought it would be quite interesting to produce one which is aimed towards a specific region.
Prior to launching Plymcast, we had our first virgin experiences of the local music scene and were really impressed by the variety and quality of the bands and musicians in the area.
Rather than make a purely music or entertainment based podcast (as there were already podcasts doing this – like the Melting Pot Sessions) - we thought it could be interesting to produce a hybrid format combining comedy, entertainment and local music primarily targeting younger audiences.
What is the most difficult aspect of getting it going?
Initially, penetrating the local music scene and convincing bands and venues that this project would be worth getting involved in.
What are your backgrounds?
We both have a passion with live bands and comedy – and love going to festivals and larking about! We both work in media, audio production primarily and so Plymcast was quite a natural thing to do. Mark is Plymouth born and bred (with a branchless family tree to prove this) and Gaz has lived in the city for many years. Jon an actor and voiceover has returned from London back to Plymouth, where he grew up.
What are you favourite local bands?
We are amazed by the quality of the local band scene – and constantly hearing new bands we’ve not hear before! We are really getting into some of the bands. Some of our favorites are Ecco Jones, Lemanis, Full Speed Alone, Eleven Lives Left, Van Daniels, Mexico View, The Damerels - to name but a few.
How long have we been doing the podcasts?
Since November last year although we had originally planned on launching much earlier but laziness took its hold for while.
What kind of feedback have you received?
Very positive so far! Artists seem to support what we’re doing and we even have a few regular listeners! Hopefully, we’ll have a few more in 6 months’ time when we’ve reach the stage of development that we think Plymcast is capable of.
