Watch your language

Those nasty Nazis are at it again – putting up CCTV cameras all over Dawlish, well, that’s according to Dawlish anti-CCTV campaigner Keith Sharp.

Not one to crack a walnut with a sledgehammer (or Jackboot) Mr Sharp sent out a leaflet emblazoned with the swastika to households in the town.

‘Tyranny begins with the suppression of free speech,’ he told the Herald Express. Before claiming that Dawlish has no crime problem to solve with the introduction of these cameras. His leaftlet begins with ‘Have you been visually raped?’

The use of language and images is more offensive than challenging, but the encroachment (and cost) of CCTV – and ID cards – needs to be, err ‘tempered’. Do we need to remind Mr Sharp that it’s exploiting the fear of terrorism, crime, hoodies, the youth, that starts the CCTV Big Brother process in the first place? Freedom fighter, maybe. Campaigner for civil liberties, perhaps. But unless he goes about it another way, poor Mr Sharp will just seem like a nut which time, apathy or the Public Order Act, will crack.
