(anti) Plastic fantastic
The telling quote from anti-placky-bag person Rebecca Hosking in yesterday’s Guardian update on the Modbury anti-placky bag developments was ‘it has to come from the residents and from the community’.
So, is Modbury a haloed area of environmental thinking? It’s not the ‘beacon for alternative lifestyles’ like ‘fashionable’ Totnes, but it has succeeded in its carrier campaign. Probably because the campaign is sensible, and based on a growing awareness of the impact of modern living.
Fashionable Totnes is doing its bit in this spread of raising awarness through its holisitc Transition Towns programme, and the Bovey Climate Action group is also working its own environmental campaigns. All of these are community-led grass-roots commitments that highlight the awareness, passion and individuality of the communities within the People’s Republic. Let’s hope they continue to gain momentum through working together and that real change comes from the lowest common denominator - the people - rather than the basest common need - greed.
