Playing on the side

The Bit on the Side in Paignton sprang into action again on Friday with another AEON residency. This is planned to be the regular venue for new, interesting, varied and kicking music in the region. And let’s face it, Torbay is calling out for something like it.

A citizen of the republic sent in their review. Remember, if you’re interested in arts, the environment, current affairs and would like to write for a blog that gets more than one-third of a million hits a year, get in touch with info@peoplesrepublicofsouthdevon.co.uk.

Friday 18 May - The Overdrive Project at Paignton Theatre

There was magic on the night. They were in great form, and having listened again and again to the selections on MySpace, let’s hear a cheer for Civilian. Drawing on a great history of what I will call strong-arm rock, influences include Audioslave (playing in our car on the way to the gig), Prince, System Of A Down and Incubus. Now that’s a fantastic playlist, which gives a hint of the Civilian sound – strong vocals, powerful rhythm section, and songs with plenty of structure and interplay.Kevin (drums) and Finn (bass) are often driving the songs, yet with craft and style. High energy and skillful variation means Civilian’s songs carry both attitude and appeal. Joshi has a range and power to bring colour and freshness to the lyrics, while Jamie D (guitar) weaves rhythm and lead duties with equal aplomb.

The sharp contrast between the bands is best shown when trying to remember individual songs. Is there character and tone which carries through to the next day? With Civilian, a definite yes. Careful What You Wish For and Tie Back The Sun are examples of songwriting with a great combination of intelligence and raw energy. Civilian bring light and shade, strength and chill, all wrapped in one of the best fresh sounds around. They might be civil, but they rok!

Check the Civilian myspace real soon – but you need to catch them live too [or sample the best of both worlds - hear their early Melting Pot studio session on the downloads page].

Well, that certainly fired their imagination. If your fire is in danger of burning out, get in touch - we’re sure we can prod the embers. Or just turn up to one of these nights, there’s usually one of us around.
