Fear of riding
Move over Erica Jong, people are now scared of cycling, and that’s even in the midst of nation cycle week. Not surprising really give the state of some of the cycle paths (watch where following some of the painted signs will lead you).
Despite, or maybe because of, new cycle paths (and the pedalling of environmental issues), bicycle use in Great Britain is on the downturn. The average number of cycle trips fell from 18 in 1995-1997 to 14 in 2005 (and who knows how many David Cameron has now turned off the transport method). Could be there are just fewer cyclists around - 2,420 were killed or seriously injured last year.
Brake think more people would cycle if the national cycle network included more off-road cycle paths between homes and amenities, ’cause cycling on the road just aint appealing.
So, people, if we want to change this trend, best to take the advice from perennial favourite Lord Tebbit, and get on your bike - surely they can’t curb us all.
