Poetry in motion
Poetry, as nobody is ever likely to say, is the unsung song of your soul, that is spoken. Or you could get down to the fifth (count them) Port Eliot Lit Fest, at Port Eliot, Saltash, Cornwall, from Friday 20 to Sunday 22 July.
The organisers tell us they’ve discovered ‘a host of eclectic, fresh, exciting new poets who are completely turning the art on its head’ - but how reliable is that if it doesn’t rhyme?
One of these is the People Republic of South Devon’s own Marrick Taylor, who is based in Plymouth and creates performance poetry which ranges from work with a serious message to ‘wacky, nonsense poetry’.
Alongside his writing, Marrick is an accomplished young film maker and holds an unusual talent for speaking backwards and he’ll be performing in the Young People’s Mucking About With Words tent at the festival.
Marrick told us: ‘I usually write anywhere and when something inspires me. Whether it’s something that I’ve seen that moves me or I just feel like writing something off the wall. I recently saw the performance poet Dreadlock Alien in Exeter which has inspired me to write a poem of a similar rhythm.’
Catch up with Marrick at the lit event, apparently it’s ‘doogyrev’.
