Reader offer

Gossypium logo

Long before it became the latest high street ploy (tell that to Asda, Primark and Tesco), some companies were trying to ensure a fair deal for textile workers. One of these was Gossypium.

And those coolest of Lewes cats have offered readers of The People’s Republic of South Devon a chance to win one of their fine t-shirts.

All you have to do is email us the answer to this poser: Who’s the former Chancellor of the Exchequer? (Here’s a clue, it’s the current Prime Minister). Who says we don’t lift the bar of political involvement?

And do not fear, there will be no rigged telephone voting here. Just email info@peoplesrepublicofsouthdevon.co.uk with the subject line Gossypium (cool clothes competition is optional), and include the answer in the body of email. It’s that easy.

The first randomly chosen email with the correct answer will be the winner - if they’re all wrong, we’ll re-think. Oh, and the decision of the collective is final. The closing date is Friday, August 17.

In the meantime, have some solace in the extra special 10 per cent discount the nice Gossypium people have offered citizens of the republic. Just enter the word ‘republic’ on the checkout page and voila. If only everything were that simple.

Calling all filmmakers

This is just a little something that fell into our inbox from the people across the hall, Devon and Cornwall Film. Sounds so interesting we may just dust off the old cine camera and head along to Widecombe fair. Read, enjoy, submit.

“The movies of Free Cinema in the 1950s saw young talented directors making films which reflected the world around them, outside the studio system and on shoestring budgets.

Devon and Cornwall Film is calling on directors of today to follow that example and make a short, socially real documentary for the D+CFree competition.

The films of D+CFree will be shown with Free Cinema 1, at Two Short Nights, the short film festival at the Exeter Phoenix on December 6 and 7, and be eligible for a unique award designed by Helen Snell.

The films should be documentary-based and no longer than 10 minutes and can be shot on any medium and submitted on DVD to Devon and Cornwall Film, 19 Gloucester Road, Newton Abbot, TQ12 1AY. Mobile movies should be sent to

ideas@dandcfilm.co.uk

The closing date is November 5.

Read more about it at http://www.devon-cornwall-film.co.uk/2007/05/27/dcfree-competition/

Two Short Nights takes place at the Exeter Phoenix on Thursday, December 6 and Friday December 7. The Free Cinema event, featuring D+CFree will take place on Thursday, December 6, starting at 2pm. It will include a discussion on Free Cinema led by Christophe Dupin, who produced the BFI Free Cinema compilation, and chaired by Dan Paulationo, film lecturer at Plymouth College of Art and Design.

Three minute warning

What the heck are you doing sitting there when there’s a three-minute warning?

As part of the the Plymouth PL:AY festival of adventure, anticipation and encounters, the Spaghetti Club club have asked for all you people out there to show your three-minute piece of performance, film/video/time-based/sonic art, live art, text experimental theatre, cabaret, dance movement intervention or miscellaneous event along to Annabel’s Cabaret and Discoteque on Saturday, July 28. Basically, your artistic party piece.

Curtain’s up at 9pm, so if you want to perform get there an hour earlier. For details of the equipment available and other titbits contact Elaine on ekordys@googlemail.com.

PL:AY is part of the South Devon Summer Festival.

Come on over to MySpace

Dya remember when we used to carry a ‘what you missed on D+CFilm’ story every week? Oh, come on, you do. Think!

Anyway, now they’re doing it on the D+CFilm MySpace page instead (puh, we feel so spurned). Their first blog features links like ‘Homoerotic relationships with dwarves’ and ‘Fun with mutating encryption algorithms’, so you pretty much know what to expect.

It’s probably the best way of keeping up with what’s going down over on D+CFilm - other than, yknow, actually reading the bloody thing.

Citizens of the world

A new website is set to launch that will bring all the peoples of Plymouth together.

Called My Plymouth, members of the community all called to put down their own thoughts, ideas, brickbats and musings in their native language and send them in to the site, which will then plonk them up for the world to see.

The whole thing is the brainchild of Polish translator and European culture and language expert Mirak Wilewski.

‘The website is dedicated to all people living in Plymouth, regardless of their original language. There are many great people living in the city, who have a lot of interesting things to say. The problem is that some of them prefer to express themselves in Polish, Urud, Chinese, Latvian, and so on,’ said Mirak.

As citizens of the People’s Republic of South Devon are citizens of the world, we can just stand by mute in our praise of such a venture. Let the babble continue.

Trail blaizers

On the trail with TRAIL

TRAIL, the trip around recycled art on the Dawlish and Teignmouth seafront, opens today.

Now in its third year, this example of putting recycled art in the landscape just keeps on going and has quickly become an aspect of the south coast summer.

Skip along to the two resorts, spot the art and watch how people react. It’s worth anyone’s wet weekend.

Local Anaesthetic

Numb in action

We love a success story here at the People’s Republic control room, especially on a Friday, so imagine our joy when Numb (unofficially) launched their new album Local Anaesthetic at Solo Records, Exeter, yesterday.

These melodic fun lovers are hot footing all over the country at the moment getting more gigs and bigger venues under their belts, so all is looking groovy (forgive the record-industry patois).

You may remember Numb were the first band to brave the Melting Pot Studio Sessions at the Music Mill Recording Studio. And you can still watch them on SpectralWorkshopTV.

Or you could skip along to the record label site, Dekoy Records (another success story waiting to be sung) and buy the CD yourself.

What a Chav-ez

For those of us who haven’t been lucky enough to find Michael Moore’s Sicko as we trawled the web, this CNN interview, which we picked up through Inveresk Street, is quite illuminating.

Sicko is Moore’s unspinning of the USA’s abysmal health care system. Do we need to know more than the richest country in the world doesn’t have free health care for its citizens? And this is the type of system we believe is earmarked to replace the NHS.

Moore takes on the credibility of the reporting in the CNN piece which attacks his film and at the end of the clip is called ‘more leftwing than Hugo Chavez‘ - oil to Red Ken, and closing down certain TV channels, what could be sweeter?

Doff’s off

Wave goodbye to one of the early ‘investigators’ of The People’s Republic of South Devon. Doff Pollard, Teignbridge District Council Arts Development Officer, is leaving the council to pursue her career up north.

Doff Pollard Of Teignbridge Council, as she came to be affectionately know to us, was one of the first to pick up on our arts coverage and actively encourage participation in as many art and cultural events throughout the region as possible. She was a driving force behind the Nine Days of Art, and chairs the Devon Artists Network for the county-wide Devon Art Works open studios exhibition in September.

She’s off to the Tees Valley. Shame.
