Wage war

Friday is always a good day to reflect on figures, so get you mince pies (that’s seasonal rhyming slang for eyes) around the latest info on average pay for the South West. If we could afford straw we would have carried out a straw poll about these levels of income, instead we just asked and found that no-one we knew were paid anything near this. And, phew what differences. Seems there are still pockets of poverty around
Read ‘em and weep. (These are from the ONS 2007 Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings, by the way, and quoted from the TUC’s monthly newsletter.)
“The latest median gross annual pay figures for South West England were £18,629 (workplace) and £18,860 (residence). The respective mean averages were £22,072 and £22,498 Swindon, Bristol and South Gloucestershire have earnings figures above the workplace average. But Torbay and Cornwall are 20% or more below average. At a district level, the range is from £13,114 in Torridge to £21,804 in Tewkesbury.
“Statistical issues make year-by-year comparisons tricky. For example, whilst median workplace annual pay is said to have increased by 2.9% for the South West as a whole between 2006 and 2007, this covers a range from a 14.2% increase in Gloucester to a fall of 9.6% in Sedgemoor.
