Movement on road plans

posted by Cptn

Picture of the bypass
Roll up, roll up, the latest South Devon Link Road – that’s the Kingskerswell Bypass to you – exhibition kicks off on Thursday January 24, and is intended to inform residents of the Compulsory Purchase Orders and Side Road Order (whatever they are). The bypass has been planned since 1951, so don’t miss the latest installment - it’s a bit like Coronation Street (if Coronation Street was a bypass).
The display starts at Kingskerswell Community and Leisure Centre on Thursday from 4pm to 8pm, and continues on Friday 25 January from 10am to 8pm and on Saturday 26 January from 10am to 6pm. It then moves to St Luke’s Church Hall at Milber, Newton Abbot, on Thursday 31 January from 10am to 6pm, before ending up at Central Church in Tor Hill Road, Torquay, on Friday 1 February from 2pm to 8pm and on Saturday 2 February from 10am to 6pm.

Go and ‘ave a gander to see what it all means before the plans are published. From our understanding in the PRSD office it’s around the same place that one of the projects of Connect2 (those from Sustrans who won The People’s 50 Million for their travel network plans).

ITV news cuts

posted by Cptn

Just when we thought the south west was becoming a media hub, ITV has decided to hack out the core of the TV service. Puff goes all the hard work of ensuring jobs, skills and opportunities stay in the South West. But you don’t have to listen to bitter-ole-me, over on D+CFilm Tim Lezard, defence correspondent of ITV Westcountry, writes about the how the changes will affect local news, damage the region economically and hit jobs.

And what can we do? Well, let’s see if MPs are worth the pay rise – get in touch and see if they can stir themseelves. Or write to once-upon-a-time cigar-munching Michael Grade to see what he call pull out of his non-existant hat.

The poor are paying

posted by Cptn

black hole

The beauty of the Devon can often belie the pockets of poverty. And poverty costs. Here’s the link the report in the Guardian about how being poor has that extra price. The extra charges for metered utilities is just one of the issues. It used to be called the poverty trap, but maybe we should think of it more as a black hole.

UKIP roll call costs

posted by Cptn

Euro money

Having a go at UKIP can become tedious – there’s a certain ‘fish-in-a-barel’ mentality to spotting the holes in their raison d’etre – so it’s always nice when other people join in.

Here’s what South West MEP Graham Watson’s office sent through:

“MEPs from the United Kingdom Independence Party added £25,000 to the cost of the European Parliament’s business this week by demanding roll-call votes to record every vote held. These votes cost £300 each, bringing the total cost to the taxpayer to over £25,000.

Commenting on this move, South West MEP and EU Liberal Leader, Graham Watson said: ‘Once again, the anti-Europeans have shown what a waste of time and money their presence in Strasbourg is. I hope the voters will boot them out at the elections in June next year; by doing so they will save us all money.’ ”

We will just add that they are a waste of space in plenty of more places than just Strasbourg…

Unique Devon branding

posted by Cptn

How excellent it is to see the newly formed Destination Devon Ltd rising to the challenge of promoting the county as a holiday, err, destination. And what joy that said promotional material focuses on the greener tourism.

But since when has Devon been unique in having two coastlines? We hate to rain on your summer parade, but doesn’t Cornwall have two coastlines, and aren’t they closer together? And who has counted the coastlines of the Isles of Scilly?

But then again it might be our dodgy grasp on the dying art of geography – our official statement of what makes up the ‘South Devon’ of the People’s Republic is anything below the 51st parallel, and we think a Butrus Butrus Root is a former UN General Secretary.

If you can shed any light on the uniqueness of Devon’s two coastlines, email us.

Artists of the world unite!

Well, artists of Devon anyway. And it’s not so much as unite as go along to a bunch of events to find out about what’s in store for this year’s Devon Open Studio event, which is due to take place between September 6 and 21.

•    Drewsteignton – Mon 21 January at 7.30pm. Drewsteignton church.
•    Paignton – Tues 22 Jan at 6.30pm. Palace Theatre, Paignton.
•    Totnes – Wed 23 January at 7pm. Repton Room, Follaton House, South Hams District Council offices.
•    Newton Abbot – Thurs 24 January at 6pm. Forde House, Teignbridge DC offices.
•    Exeter – Mon 28 January at 7pm. Art Terracina Gallery, Exeter Quay.
•    Tavistock – Tues 29 January at 7pm. The Wharf Arts Centre, Tavistock.
•    Sidmouth – Wed 30 January at 6.45pm. East Devon District Council offices, Knowle, Sidmouth.
•    Barnstaple - Thu 31 January at 6pm. Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon.

This year’s plan will feature a series of open studio art ‘trails’ across Devon. Artists will group themselves into geographical areas and a Trail Map will be produced for each one. There will be around 20 – 24 venues per trail. High quality food producers in each Trail area such as farm shops, cafes, pubs and delis will also be featured on the maps.

Spiritual resurgence on Dartmoor

posted by Cptn

Satish Kumar
We all love Dartmoor, but does it really have an ‘ethereal landscape’? The only way to find out is to watch Earth Pilgrim - A Year on Dartmoor, on BBC2 on Friday 18 at 8pm – cancel your plans, that’s tonight folks.

Editor of Resurgence magazine Satish Kumar walks the walk on the moor to explore ancient woods and rivers and spot the red deer, emperor moths and starling roosts.

Apparently his is a spiritual journey, with lyrical, uplifting and timely according to the BBC (whatever that means) meditiations on nature and the causes of nature. All we know is that Satish is a real international heavyweight when it comes to the environment, he’s right on your doorstep and well worth checking out.

Getting earthy

posted by Cptn

The Plymouth Environment Centre logo

The Earth cafe, run by the Plymouth Environment Centre, sounds like our kinda place, where you can ‘relax, talk, meet people or find information on campaigns, issues and actions’.

The next Earth cafe is taking place on Saturday, January 19 from 7.30pm to 11pm at the Cellar Bar, Fortescue Pub, Mutley Plain, Plymouth. There will be food from 7.30pm to 9.30pm and music from 10pm.

Pop along to stimulate the debate on the environment, human right, peace, social justice, and anything else that pops into your mind.
