We love social enterprises – we are one, of course – that’s why it’s great to hear that two social enterprises from the within the republic’s environs have been chosen to compete for a share of £500,000.
Plymouth Access to Housing (Path) plans to establish a social enterprise letting agency in the city, charging landlords competitive fees and creating an easier route into privately-rented housing for clients.
And Plymouth-based Shekinah Mission teaches bricklaying, plastering and art and craft skills to socially-disadvantaged people to develop their skills and help them back into employment, accommodation and independent living.
Huzzah to them!
Along with the lukka, the winner will receive mentoring and a two-day enterprse make-over. The 15 finalists will pitch their business ideas to a panel of entrepreneurs.
The competition is being organised by Spark, which is looking to social enterprises to combat homelessness.
The competition will take place at the end of May.

- Women’s Day exhibition at Birdhwood House, Totnes until, Sunday March 16

As I entered the kitchen at Birdwood House, Totnes, where the preperation for the Women’s Day exhibition was taking place, it was as if i had stepped back in time as the women (and one boy child who did not seem that interested) were sewing and generally being crafty.
The first thing I spotted was a big tent-like womb. It towered over me and looked welcoming with its silky scarlet outer shell and the scarlet fluffy rug which was the flooring to this bloody shell. As I cautiously clambered inside, being careful not to rip the lining, I couldnt help but be filled with an inward irony – here I was cradled in a large, dark womanly womb when I too am menstruating, ahhh the layers of meaning.
As a woman, I do feel a sense of striving for our potential to be allowed to develop, but as a disabled person I feel that now disability issues need to be highlighted. But, for now, all the power to the women, may they eat chocolate to their hearts content, and don’t let the man get you down.

There’s more art at the Exeter Phoenix after the weekend. This is on one of the formerly blank back walls of the outside terrace. When the possé from the republic were there it was still a work in progress, but we’re sure the ladders will have been removed by now.
