Fossil Fools Day campaigners from Rising Tide UK took to the roof of the Esso petrol station, Exeter Street, Plymouth today.
According the Fossil Fools website: “The demonstrators are calling for ExxonMobil to acknowledge the urgency of climate change, to cease funding think-tanks and lobbyists that are committed to blocking internationally agreed policies on global warming, and to start investing in renewable energy. With banners, leaflets and costumes – this peaceful protest aims to focus attention on Esso as a major obstacle to those seeking solutions that address climate change.”
This protest is part of Fossil Fools Day, a nationwide day of action called by Rising Tide for today.
Apparently the protestors were dressed as clowns, and five were arrested.

In the face of US subsidies for biofuel, and increasing scientific naysaying about the fuel, the South West Regional Development Agency (swRDS) has £3 million to invest in bioheat projects in the South West.
Regen SW has been preparing the ground through the South West Bioheat Programme and 30 potential projects have been identified for the £3 million, which is to come from Defra’s Bio-engergy Captial Grants scheme.
Jonny Boston, energy manager for the South West RDA, told the PRSD: “This is a tremendous result for the region and represents a massive advancement in biomass technology in the South West. Developing alternative sources of energy both for electricity and for heating, of which bioheat is a key component, is vital in tackling climate change and promoting a low-carbon, resource-efficient economy.
Matthew Spencer, chief executive of Regen SW, said: “Wood heating is coming of age, and we now have a range of bioheat projects that are, quite literally, oven-ready for investment. Defra’s funding will allow some of the region’s biggest heat users to make the switch from oil and gas to wood heating.”
Apparently, among the 30 projects that Regen SW has identified for potential bioheat plants are the Met Office in Exeter and Dairy Crest’s creamery at Davidstow in North Cornwall.
