Fighting discrimination

April 2nd, 2008

The fight against discrimination continues with the formation of the new South West Transgender Equality Network is to tackle discrimination.

Co-chair Helen Thompson told the PRSD: “Although it’s against the law to discriminate against someone because of their sex, a lot of it goes on, especially for people who are transgender.

“This is especially true when it comes to looking for jobs. Often it’s not out in the open – it’s secondary discrimination, but it happens nonetheless.”

One in every 10,000 people in the UK is estimated to be a male-to-female transgender (which means there would be 500 in the South West), and one in every 31 is a female-to-male (160 in the South West).
