Spies like us (preview)

- Spies, Exeter Northcott, April 22-26

Theatre Alibi performing the adaptation of Michael Frayn’s Whitbread winning novel at the Exeter Northcott – no wonder the tickets are going like hot pies on a cold day.

The Northcott-based Theatre Alibi have accumulated an impressive body of work winning plaudits and friends on the way, and so it’s great to have the chance to see them in their home city in an adult piece at the newly refurbished theatre. There’s a sense of entrenched optimism around the place after the theatre’s debacle with the Arts Council and the desire for a top-notch hit is almost palpable.

The story has been described as a mix of Atonements, The Go-Between and Just William. Set during the Second World War in a suburban close, two boys play at detectives hope to catch a German spy but find something else.

A strong score and simple sets are Alibi trademarks, and there will be live accompaniment to the live action with cello and accordion (a toe-tapping combination, to be sure).

The show has been touring since February and is a co-production with Oxford Playhouse, and isn’t suitable for people below the age of 14.

To book tickets, pop along to the Northcott Theatre site.
