Who would have thought the Rainbow Flag had been around 30 years? First used in the gay freedom day parade in San Franciso in 1978, its 30th anniversary will be celebrated in Plymouth’s Lord Mayor’s Day Parade.
The theme for this year’s Plymouth parade, which takes place on May 17, is “The people and diverse communities of Plymouth”, and an open invitation has been issued by the committee of plymouth prideevent 2008 for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans (LGBT) communities’ families and friends to join its float in the parade, which will be bedecked with Rainbow Flags. Those who want to take part should meet on Plymouth Hoe at 10am on the day.
Plymouth prideevent 2008 also organises the region’s largest annual Pride event, a free entry one-day do in Plymouth Guildhall on Saturday, June 7.
According to the press release: “Attractions will include boy band Billiam, who are the official support act for Girls Aloud Tangled Up tour 2008, a samba band, a Madonna tribute singer, belly dancers, rodeo bull, sumo suits, a bungee run, line dancing, and street and circus skills entertainers, plus lots more, while on the more serious side there will be a public forum involving police, health, and city council representatives.”
