We’ve had a couple of affordable homes stories this week.
One is about rural housing enablers who work with small rural communities (fewer than than 3,000 souls) and have identified and built 123 affordable homes, with 324 in the pipeline. But these rural housing enabler posts were under threat till Devon County Council put it’s hand in its pocket to the tune of £46,000, after Defra pulled out.
Devon has three of these enablers working within the affordable housing programme managed by the Community Council of Devon on behalf of the county’s Rural Housing Partnership, with disctrict councils along with registered social landlords and probably Uncle Tom Cobbley and all.
According to the press release: “The small team has assessed the affordable housing needs of 17,000 housesholds across 43 rural parishes, and have identified over 600 households in need of affordable homes since 2006. The programme costs £100,000 each year, and DEFRA in the past has funded 80% of that cost.”
The release also said: “The problems of affordable housing are particularly acute in Devon. In 2006, typical house prices in the county were 14 times higher than average incomes, and there were over 21,000 people on local authorities waiting lists. “In response to Defra’s funding withdrawal, the Commission for Rural Communities has been lobbying Government to reinstate some level of central support, and the Devon Rural Housing Partnership has been supporting this campaign.”
