The Fairlynch Museum is lucky to have Evelyn Dewar as resident artist and to have the exhibition for the whole of the summer.
This tiny cottage museum has in its collection some intricate textiles and jewellery and Evelyn became intrigued by these pieces, which in turn inspired the body of work on show.
The paintings bring about a fantasy of a time before that has been resurrected into a contemporary context through the interpretation of paint, colour and Evelyn’s experiences in Budleigh.
Evelyn takes this old museum collection out of the closet and, through her work, sets it free, resurrecting the beauty within the pieces and releasing it to the universe, shaking its stories free again, like butterflies in the wind.
I would happily have any of this work in my home (Evelyn’s paintings would be a great addition to grace your space), but in context in the museum, I would love to see this work in a area outside the Fairlynch – it cries out for and deserves a larger space to truly allow the story to unfold.
But what could be better than a day in a beautiful and historic time warp of a Devonshire seaside town, a real ice-cream and some exquisite affordable works of art.
