Devon is definitely Dance Central, no sooner does the two-month extravaganza of Dance ing Devon shimmy into being than the phenomena that is the Re*Flex dance company perform at the Exeter Phoenix, on Thursday June 5 at 8pm.
Formed in June 2005 by a bunch of enthusiastic young dancers from Exeter after a residency with a Leeds-based dance company, this will be the third full-scale performance from the group – and it will be the second time they sold out.
Founder member Lucie Tullett told the PRSD: ‘There’s a unique energy to the classes. This is by young people and for young people.’
The group rehearse once a week for three hours and choreograph and create all the material themselves.
Lucie has also been skipping over to the other side of the stage and reviewing pieces, which have appeared on the PRSD
“I saw the opportunity advertised and I thought it would be a good opportunity.
“It’s really interesting to see a lot of new work and to have a eye and to evaluate every part of a performance,” she said.
Lucie studies dance in Bristol and has invited three Bristol acts to accompany the five from Re*Flex for Thursday’s show.
“It’s good to get A’ Level students and graduates dancing together - it means you need to step up your game.”
And due to their success, the 18-strong company is looking to expand.
“We’re too big for one company,” said Lucie, and on July 31 between 11am and 5pm they will be holding auditions at the Exeter Phoenix. They are hoping to get more graduate dancers, as well as young Re*Flex groups of 11-14 year olds and 14- 19 year olds plus a group of mixed ability boys.
