Employment rates
July 14th, 2008
Now here’s something to consider - in the period February-April 2008, employment and unemployment rates in the region were 78.7% and 4.0% respectively. Over the last year, employment has risen by 45,000 and unemployment by 6,000. The figures point to a slowdown, not a recession.
Thanks to the TUC for that.

We’re only talking about the officially working and jobless here. Ever since the Thirties, unemployment statistics have been deeply emblematic of our society’s health and so are manipulated and disguised. About 1 in 6 of us are fully ‘economically inactive’, with millions more in part-time employment even when they would like a full-time job. Accordingly, the figure is far higher than those that were unemployed at the height of the last recession. The hidden jobless include those that are on disability benefit, students (bearing in mind that the age for leaving education is now 18 or, in many cases, 21), those dependent on other workers, parents, the involuntary early retired, and those thousands of us who just make do with a variety of sources of income. Even in work, Devon’s average wage is supposed to be £347 a week, while the average for England is £429. Yet, this annual income figure of £18,000 is also distorted by those few with incomes far above the norm.
