Book review - The Good Plain Cook

August 21st, 2008

Sarah Clarke of The Torbay Bookshop reviews the latest releases.

The Good Plain Cook, by Bethan Roberts

Kitty Allen is The Good Plain Cook, the subject of Bethan Roberts’s evocative and compelling novel set during a long hot summer in 1936. Answering an advert but not possessing the qualifications, she doesn’t really what to expect from her eccentric and bohemian American employer. There’s the strange 11-year-old daughter, and the gentlemen friend, who is meant to be writing something but never puts pen to paper. Very enjoyable.

The Good Plain Cook, Bethan Roberts, Sepent’s Tail, £10.99, 9781846686658
