Don’tcha just love advertising. A new Don’t Let Devon go to Waste campaign has TV ad has a young farmer playing a recycled drum kit imagining he is playing to a huge audience. When he comes out of his daydream, he realises his only crowd are his cows.

The aim of the advert, we are told, is to recognise all the effort that people put into recycling and to show how it can catch on

Devon is the third best recycling county in England with the current recycling/composting rate standing at 50 per cent, way above the overall rate for England of 32 per cent.

The aim of the advert is to recognise all the effort that people put into recycling and to show how it can catch on, says the county council, which is hoping the ad will help Devon reach its target of 60 per cent recycling/composting by 2019/20.

And just for a little background info, the recycling rate in Devon has increased year-on-year since it was introduced in 1978. Then, licensed totters recovered recyclables from items brought to Recycling Centres across the country. Bottle and glass banks were first introduced to Devon in 1980 and expanded throughout the ’80s. Devon’s first paper bank was sited in Exeter in 1991. By 1992, Devon’s recycling rate was 2.4 per cent and Devon was designated a ‘Recycling County’ in a scheme promoted by Friends of the Earth. In 1994, the first kerbside collection schemes were introduced in both Exeter and Plymouth.
