The UK is one of the richest nations in the world, so the news that 45 per cent of children in North Devon are living in poverty is shocking.

The figure is taken from a Campaign to End Child Poverty report, which said that children living in low income families, where no one was working more than 16 hours a week or where the family was receiving the full entitlement of Working Tax Credits.

North Devon MP Nick Harvey told the North Devon Journal: “People think poverty only happens in urban areas, but the reality is that for some living in rural areas life is very difficult,” said Mr Harvey.

“It impacts not only on the everyday existence of a child, but on their life chances.

“In 2008, it should not be the case that a child living in one area of the country will live longer than a child living in another, merely because of the circumstances of their birth.”
