Frink’s Chaucer etchings

Geoffrey Chaucer, the Russell Brand of his day, with his tales of the high livin’ of the fast and furious (albeit in the Middle Ages), has been the inspiration for many an artist, and the Chaucer-inspired etchings of Dame Elisabeth Frink, are making their own special pilgrimage to Devon.

In the exhibition Drawing on Chaucer, at the Brook Gallery, in Budleigh Salterton, between October 19 to November 9, focuses on Dame Lis’s mysterious etchings of The Canterbury Tales.

Most famed for her sculpture (which picked up the moniker of the ‘Geometry of fear school’ in the 1950s), Dame Lis also engaged in the odd etching. Gallery owner Angela Yarwood told the PRSD: “The simplicity of form that she used in her sculptures is reflected in her graphic work and a feeling of mystery and sensuality are pervasive.”

But remember, according to Chaucer, “People can die of mere imagination.”
