Youth candidates called for in Local Democracy Week
posted by Cptn

How fitting that the banks become public property at the start of Local Democracy Week, which is also the launch of the campaign for nominations for next year’s UK Youth Parliament. As the election take place between January 19 and 28, this looks like being as drawn out as the US Primaries.
Nominations day itself is Saturday November 8 when those aged between 11 and 18 and who live in Devon can put themselves forward as candidates for Devon’s UK Youth Parliament.
But let’s start this Local Democracy Week by finding out what the heck these Youth Parliament Members get up to…
The multi-constituented Emily Lewis (member for Exeter, South Hams and Teignbridge) told the PRSD: “I’ve been involved in the school transport group and have had great fun doing this, as well as research which we have turned into a report. I have learnt how to speak out about what I believe in and get my voice heard. I was also very fortunate to be in an interview panel.”
Becci Crocker, also representing Exeter, South Hams and Teignbridge, said: “UK Youth Parliament Members get to learn about issues relevant to young people and have their say about them. You meet new people, make friends and really have a lot of fun.
“I was privileged enough to judge on the Devon Youth Achievement Awards and be on interview panels for important jobs at Devon County Council. I designed, delivered and performed my own workshop for young people. I have also learnt about diversity and stereotypes through one of my training days and have greatly improved my confidence.”
So there you have it.
An information and nominations day is being held at County Hall on Saturday 8, November, between 11am and 2pm. Lunch is provided.
