Devon news round up: GOOD WEEK/BAD WEEK

October 18th, 2008

The big chair at Widecombe-in-the-Moor

Who are the winners and losers in this week’s news? Take your pick from cats, councils, ping pong and the big chair at Widecombe-in-the-Moor, not to mention oil slicks and Rick Stein.

GOOD WEEK

Chair apparent… Support is growing to save a 20ft chair sculpture by Henry Bruce built near Widecombe-in-the Moor. It was due to be removed by 2009, but so far the Facebook group created to save it has around 3,000 supporters.

That darn cat…Tabby cat Charlie has been returned to its owner - five years after it went missing. Owner Angela Jones from Clyst Honiton got a call saying a couple had found Charlie in their garden.

Net gain… A new table tennis club at Exmouth Community College has attracted 30 members. Instructor Brian Worts said: “We hope it will give the sport a boost and enable it to grow from the grass roots level.”

BAD WEEK

Sorry seems to be the hardest word… Plymouth finance chief Ian Bowyer wants an apology from Labour leader Tudor Evans over comments in which he likened the city council’s Icelandic investments to going into a betting shop and alleged they wouldn’t have enough money to pay their staff.

Gills allowed… The celebrity seafood chef Rick Stein has vowed to keep serving rare fish -despite warnings from the Marine Conservation Society that they could face extinction.

Slick manoeuvres… The River Plym faced a clean-up operation after a large amount of red diesel was spilt in it, creating a kilometer-wide slick.
