Fairtrade Devon

posted by Cptn

Devon has been awarded Fairtrade status, with at least two Fairtrade products available in at least 140 shops and served in 104 local cafés/catering establishments throughout the county, and a number of employees use Fairtrae products in their canteens, vending machines and other places.

The move to Fairtrade started in November last year, and now the position has been ratified by the Fairtrade Foundation.

The council press release says: “Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay a fair price and an additional social premium, Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional markets which traditionally discriminate against the poorest producers. Fairtrade producers also address inequalities within their communities, for example by combating child labour and by making sure women are represented on decision-making bodies.

“Schools and colleges from all over Devon stepped up to support the campaign including Exeter College, East Devon College, Ivybridge Community College, Teignmouth Community College and Axe Valley Community College. Exeter University gained its Fairtrade status in March. Churches and community groups are also actively involved.”

Visit the Fairtrade Devon site for more details and who’s taken up the Fairtrade mantle.

Photographing social change

posted by Cptn

A dreary Monday is always a good time to reassess - life, work, whatever… And with that flurry of ideas fluttering around your mind like so many autumn leaves, you could apply for an ethical job, or you could take a picture showing how social enterprises are changing the world, for which you might win the chance to shadow Gaynor Coley, the managing director of the Eden Project – now that would be a bit of a change to the old routine.

All you have to do is take a photograph that shows what social enterprise can transform lives, or as ‘the voice for South West social enterprise and supports the development of sustainable social enterprises in the region’ RISE says, to show ‘how social enterprises are changing the world one community at a time’, and send it in for the RISE Social Enterprise Photography Competition.

Each photo needs a caption of 75 words giving the low down on the story behind the image, and the pictures will be judged on their visual impact and the story they tell.

There are a heap load of prizes, but the deadline is October 28, so take your picture… and make it snappy!

Send your photo to photocompetition@socialenterprise.org.uk
