Friday night’s gonna to be all right!

posted by Cptn

Ivybridge, apparently

The South Hams Youth Night, which gets young people into youth centres on a Friday night at a reduced charge, has been given a £5000 financial boost from the county council, which means it can continue – for another year at least.

The Youth Nights have been taking place in Dartmouth, Ivybridge, Kingsbridge and Totnes, since 2006, and for the incredibly manageable cost of £2 include a whole range of activities, from dance workshops to a lifeguard courses.

Here are some quotes about the service from young people in Dartmouth and Totnes:

“The roller disco is great. I’d rather be here than outside.”

“It’s better than being bored, better than being on the streets and getting into trouble and there are cool activities.”

“The staff are amazing.”

“You get your own free space to chill - something to do instead of sitting at home or going into town. There are lots of things to do for £2, like gym, football, basketball, kangaroo boxing - that’s well good!”

The project, a collaboration between Devon County Council’s Youth Service teamed and the local leisure centres in the towns has not only increased the use of leisure centres on Fridays but could potentially see young people returning at other times of the week and taking up new sports.

Totnes farmers market to close

posted by Cptn

The reputation of Totnes as a hip and happening supportive community of the ethically minded is under fire as the monthly farmers market is set to close down, with Saturday’s being the last.
Only five people are reported to be getting their groceries from the market.

It isn’t only Totnes farmers market that’s suffering, the Ivybridge market closed in April, but the Dartmouth and Kingsbridge markets are still going strong, apparently.

There are plans to create a Totnes Food and Farming Network, featuring farmers, producers and retailer, with the hope of putting the impetus back into the local food scene.

Farmer John Sherrell told the Western Morning News: “We are sorry the farmers’ market in Totnes is closing. We do need to find new ways to ensure that locally-produced food reaches local retailers and residents so I welcome the creation of this network.”
