Ivybridge, apparently
The South Hams Youth Night, which gets young people into youth centres on a Friday night at a reduced charge, has been given a £5000 financial boost from the county council, which means it can continue – for another year at least.
The Youth Nights have been taking place in Dartmouth, Ivybridge, Kingsbridge and Totnes, since 2006, and for the incredibly manageable cost of £2 include a whole range of activities, from dance workshops to a lifeguard courses.
Here are some quotes about the service from young people in Dartmouth and Totnes:
“The roller disco is great. I’d rather be here than outside.”
“It’s better than being bored, better than being on the streets and getting into trouble and there are cool activities.”
“The staff are amazing.”
“You get your own free space to chill - something to do instead of sitting at home or going into town. There are lots of things to do for £2, like gym, football, basketball, kangaroo boxing - that’s well good!”
The project, a collaboration between Devon County Council’s Youth Service teamed and the local leisure centres in the towns has not only increased the use of leisure centres on Fridays but could potentially see young people returning at other times of the week and taking up new sports.
