Energy efficiency on display in Devon buildings

posted by Cptn

Transparent local government with a green tinge, is how us here in the PRSD office are seeing the new energy certificates, which Devon County Council buildings (including schools) are going to display.

As with High Street energy certification, the scale runs from A to G (A being good, and G being awful). County Hall in Exeter got a C, with a CO2 score of 941 tonnes, which is above average.

Apparently, ‘meter readings along with an assessment of heating, insulation and ventilation systems were used to produce this operational rating’.

“The certificate which is on public display in the reception area shows the energy usage of County Hall and the amount of CO2 produced by the building. The assessment also includes an advisory report with recommendations on the measures required to improve the energy rating.

“One of the measures planned is the introduction of a biomass boiler which will produce heat by burning locally supplied woodchip. It will replace the gas fired boiler and is expected to reduce annual CO2 emissions by about 300 tonnes. It is scheduled to be commissioned by the end of the financial year,” says the county press release.

For more information on the Display Energy Certificate, go to the Communities and Local Government site.
