A marmoset in the lab
.
The ethical question of animal experimentation has been investigated by Abigail Edge during her visit to an animal testing lab, in the wake of a European Commission proposal on using great apes in testing and a Cardiff University report, which said there were “deep emotional trauma” among those who care for animals in research.
She found the testers themselves not like “torturers and murderers” they are often portrayed as, but rather “all of them possessed a strong – surprising, even – affection for the animals in their care”.
And the EU is out-of-step, “great apes have not been used in EU research for the past six years and UK regulations forbid their use”, says Abigail. What we need are alternatives to animal testing.
But did her visit put paid to the ethical debate on animal testing for health reasons? ‘Fraid not. What we can all agree on though, is “testing for vanity is both unnecessary and inhumane”.
