“The need to reduce harmful emissions in our atmosphere cannot be denied,” says South West MEP Giles Chichester. “But in this depressed economic climate we must tackle the challenges in a realistic manner. Progress towards a greener economy must take serious note of costs and the timing of decisions.” But what does that mean, Giles? Pray continue…
“Thanks to the efforts of Conservative Members of the European Parliament, the new EU legislation aimed at reducing vehicle CO2 emissions will now balance economic realism with the need to cut pollution,” says the number one choice for European Conservatives in the South West.
“Instead of the proposed EU Directive imposing on manufacturers a cut in CO2 car emissions of 18% – or reducing down to 130grams per km – by 2012, the Conservative MEPs have been able to postpone the implementation date until 2015. What’s more, the long-term target of 95 grams must now be implemented by 2020, thus giving car manufacturers time to develop new lower emission technologies for cars that are still on the drawing board.”
