It is D, desirable. E, exciting. Very, very pretty. O, ohhh oh! … And er, N… D-E-V-O-N! D-E-V-O-N!” Are not the words to the winning Song4Devon competition. D-E-V-O-N, by Tavistock primary school teacher Karen Higginson, was awarded the title of theme tune to celebrate Devon, in some kind of X-Factor voting thing, this morning.

The moment of winning the Song for Devon competition live on the Matt Woodley Show, in the Radio Devon studios, Exeter, are teacher, Karen Higginson, music co-ordinator at Whitchurch Community Primary School, Tavistock, with pupils Aimee Chappell, nine, second right, and Abbie Craig, 10, and Matt Woodley. Karen, who teaches at Whitchurch Community Primary School, told the PRSD: Wow, we are so pleased that the public has voted for our song. The children loved the whole experience of taking part, and the whole school will be over the moon. This will add extra spice to their end of term celebrations. Thanks to everyone who supported us.”

Karen, whose song was entered in the ‘Song for a Primary School’ category said: “I enjoy writing songs in school to help the children learn things like maths and science, but have never written any ‘proper’ songs before.

The other three category winners were: A song for any occasion – Paul Painter and Devon Days; A song for young people – Alan Boxer and Chris Speyer and Devon you have a way of calling; A choral song – Ian Marshall and Devon time down in the West.
