Charity shops, green holidays, and a sweet factory are the winners in the Devon newsweek. But who are the losers?
GOOD WEEK
Sweet beginnings… Crediton’s sweet factory, Bristow’s (that’s their chocolate bonbons, above), which went into receivership before Christmas with the loss of 69 jobs, is set to restart and re-hire at least half of the former staff after entrepreneur Andrew Walsh acquired the company.
Blossoming… Blossom Hill Park, a holiday park in Dunkeswell, picked up a silver for being green. The prize from the David Bellamy Conservation Awards was for the “exciting wildlife wonderland which is brimming with bio-diversity” at the venue.
Charity case… Plymouth charity shops are doing great trade, to such an extent that they’re running out of donations.
BAD WEEK
Life goes on… and on… Plymouth’s Life Centre has fallen behind schedule, and that’s just with the planning application. A council spokeswoman told the Plymouth Herald that the delay had arisen because of “discussions with our partners about exciting enhancements to the scheme, which we hope to announce later this month”. And it was not expected to affect the scheduled opening date of September 2011.
Doctor, Doctor… The town of Bow in Devon could be left without a GP after the Primary Care Trust has restarted the tendering process for the practice when the two feuding incumbents couldn’t agree to disagree.
Tourism… A day after the tourism industry came under attack from the chairman of Visit Britain, Torbay Council was facing criticism for its approach to the sector after it promoted the director of tourism out of the role, leaving it empty.
