We expect Daily Mail readers to choke on their morning kipper at the news that the European Commission is looking to control how much fish recreational fishermen catch while they bob up and down in their boats pretending to be Ernest Hemmingways.
Not only that, but whatever they catch will be counted against the fisheries quota for the country.
But if your pastime is standing at the end of a pier with your rod in your hand, do not fear. Giles Chichester, South West Conservative MEP, is meeting Richard Ferré, the director for sea angling of the newly formed Angling Trust and chairman of the National Federation of Sea Anglers (which is based some where in South Devon), to discuss the effects of this proposed EU legislation on the South West economy today.
The proposal is set to begin its passage through the European Parliament later with month, and we’re expecting amendments – the final vote probably taking place in April. We’re certain the scales of justice will… oh nevermind.
• Sick of being ruled by those European lot or are you more concerned about local representation? What’s better, macro or micro democracy?
