29 new jobs at Exeter University as part of £80 million upgrade

It’s not all doom and gloom – there are 29 new jobs at Exeter University. Granted, the educational institution is spending £80 million to get them, but jobs they are.

Fourteen of the new jobs will be ‘themed’ under Climate Change and Sustainable Futures, six will be under Functional Materials, five under Systems Biology and four under Translational Medicine, Personalised Healthcare and Public Health.

The initial investment in these jobs has been £6.7 million (so, maybe that £80 million was a little disingenuous… meh), with £2 million in equipment and £2.8 million in studentships.

So where did that £80 million figure come from? Apparently, ‘the university will spend £30 million of existing funds on new appointments and infrastructure, boosting research and attracting up to £50 million from external sources’. Ahh, so most of it’ll come from foreign students…

… shucks, that’s us being disingenuous about the college again, because ‘in December, it was awarded a £5 million Science and Innovation Award from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council with the University of Bath’.

And ‘The Southwest Peninsula Clinical Research Collaboration, a partnership between the Peninsula Medical School, NHS South West and the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth, was recently awarded £20 million to conduct research and improve care in major conditions including heart disease, diabetes, mental illness, childhood disability and age related conditions. This new research centre will further the University’s research in translational medicine, personalised healthcare and public health.’
