Taking the fight to Europe – more sea angling fish tales

posted by Cptn

We know you’re itching to find out more about the European Commission’s attempt to bring recreational sea anglers under their net (boom, boom!) after our popular story Oh my cod! Fun fishermen’s catch to add to national quota.

To protest the European Commission’s intention of bringing the sea fishermen under the control of the European Common Fisheries Policy, South West MEP Giles Chichester met a delegations from the Angling Trust and the National Federation of Sea Anglers.

Apparently, MEP Chichester was highly critical of this European Commission proposal. He told Richard Ferré, chairman of the NFSA and a director of the Angling Trust, who headed the delegation, that he shared their frustration and anger at this ill conceived, irrational piece of legislation.

Part of the proposed regulations would require UK recreational sea anglers on a boat within EU waters to register the vessel and have the catch included in the UK fish quota agreed under the Common Fisheries Policy. This new regulation is currently being studied by the European Parliament Fisheries Committee with a final vote expected in April.

And in case you didn’t know, it’s European Election Year.

• MPs versus MEPs – who’s more important?
