Not Bad For A Girl: strokes of genius

Colour Her Bad! This week Katie Marie is playing in the snow, painting her studio, and starting her own record label. All in a week’s work for the singer/songwriter who’s Not Bad For A Girl

What did you make of all that lovely snow? Driving was slightly scary at times but for the most-part I really enjoyed all those lovely snowy views. I also made a snowman out the front of my house who is apparently called Bernard (so my other half tells me!) and we’ve had lots of people walking past saying how stunning he looks!

So other than prancing about in all the lovely snow what else have I been up to this week? Well I guess most of my time has been taken up with giving my studio a much-needed new paint job. Why is it that whenever you paint you always get more paint on you than the walls? Or is that just me?

I’ve decided to be rather boring in terms of colour and paint all the walls white and then decorate them with various piccies of gigs from over the years. Last time I had the idea of painting the walls in the live room a nice mellow sandy colour, and one of my friends said he could get me some cut price paint that was that exact colour. So I bought two tins from him and although the colour on the outside of the tin did look a lovely sandy beach colour, inside the tin was another story entirely – the word ‘neon’ springs to mind! So this time I’ve had to do about four coats just to cover the hideous orange colour I painted on there last time! Doh!

But once the studio is all newly painted and re-wired I’ll be able to hide away in there and write various weird and wonderful things.

The other thing I’ve been up to this week is meeting up with various people who are helping me start up my own record label, which I am super dooper excited about and can’t wait to get it all rolling.

In case you didn’t know, I started up a record label (Funkee Fish Records) with a friend of mine about five years ago. Sadly we had different ideas about which direction we wanted to go in and a couple of years ago we had to call it a day as it just wasn’t working, something I was very sad about indeed.

Last year was so wonderful for me in terms of the type of gigs I playing and also how things seemed to be finally falling into place. I was also offered a couple of recording contracts from local labels, both of which I turned down as I just wasn’t happy at all with letting other people have so much control over my music.

I also went along to a pretty big music conference in 2008 with various important industry and A&R people in attendance. A few of them gave talks on the music biz and how they work with artists, and I can vividly remember turning to my friend who came along with me and saying ‘This just isn’t me!’

So my plan for this year is to try and get my own record label up and running – at first it’ll be just promoting and releasing my own music, and hopefully with time I’ll be able to get other artists involved – which is something I would love to be able to do one day!

And the name of the label? Monkey Moo Records :) I’m looking forward to getting my logo sorted soon!
