Carers influence health strategy

Meetings of carers of adults with learning disabilities are taking place through the region at the moment. They are a chance for carers to discuss the future health provision of those they care for and have already taken place in Newton Abbot and Ashburton.

Nory Menneer, health development manager for the Health and Social Care Partnership, led the meeting of the Newton Abbot and Ashburton careers.

He told the PRSD: “Meeting the health needs of people with learning disabilities is a priority for the Devon Learning Disability Partnership.

“So listening to family carers who can give a first-hand account of where services are failing or succeeding is absolutely essential.”

Carers from across Teignbridge raised a range of issues including hospital care, obesity, mental health, and health checks.

“More than 2,700 adults in Devon have a learning disability,” said Jackie Milan, Learning Disabilities Carers’ worker.

“No one knows more about the day-to-day demands of looking after a loved one than carers themselves and being able to tell Mr Menneer of their concerns was a real opportunity to influence future health care across west Devon”

“This meeting was one of a series where carers can influence policies and access support. So if you look after someone with learning disabilities, don’t hesitate to get in touch with Jackie Milan on 07879 881298. ”

• Carers’ meetings are currently held in Tavistock, Ashburton, Newton Abbot, Dawlish, Kingsteignton, Kingsbridge & Ivybridge. These Meetings act to inform and consult Carers of Adults with Learning Disabilities.
