One artist’s rubbish is another artist’s artwork, or so the saying should go – and that seems to be what Haddock and Chubb, who have a new exhibition opening at the Exeter Phoenix tonight, are into.
With a moniker that could be well-served for a modern-day Hinge and Bracket, painter Simon Haddock and sculptor Stuart Chubb ‘create environments which test the relationship between the picture plane the physical space’. Which we reckon means there’s stuff on the floor.
To build their stuff, they often recycle material from major art gallery shows. And by re-using (or ‘re-framing’) the frames, they’ve created something new – a piece of modernist fantasy (according to the blurb).
In a world that’s so focused on the virtual life and 3-D screens, this is where painting, sculpture and the artist’s space merge into one. The next best thing to jumping into those chalk paintings in Mary Poppins… probably.
There’s a whole ‘built environment’ thing going on with Simon Haddock’s paintings too (which are in the other Phoenix gallery). The Brutalist city scape he hints at and spacial games he plays can seem like an urban oasis, shimmering just out of reach… only me then.
• The artists will discuss their work in an informal talk on Saturday, March 28 at 2pm
• Eye Opener: A sociable, half-hour talk to introduce and discuss the exhibition and to meet with like-minded people. Wednesday, April 8 at 10.45pm
Both events are free, but you need to book tickets.
