Exeter residents are being given the chance to borrow a smart meter from the city council and see how much electricity they use.
The device will help identify ways of reducing home electricity consumption, with savings of up to 20 per cent possible.
It clips on to the domestic meter and allows householders to see exactly how much electricity they are using, as well as the cost of running individual appliances.
The new service is being launched as part of the Exeter Big Switch Off campaign, to encourage residents, businesses and schools to save energy and cut bills.
The fortnight will end with the The Big Switch Off on March 28 when people are being encouraged to switch off unnecessary lights and appliances between 8.30pm and 9.30pm in support of Earth Hour.
To borrow a meter, call 01392 665700. Proof of identity and address is required as well as a £10 deposit.
