Tiverton Parkway, a railway station stuck in the sticks, seven miles from Tiverton town (and you have to get past Junction 27 of the M5 just to get there), is nevertheless becoming an increasingly popular station, and the culmination of the research into this phenomenon will be launched on Wednesday, April 29, at 11pm at the station itself.
Our sneak peak into the research shows that people were found to be travelling from throughout Devon and in some cases Cornwall and Somerset to use Tiverton Parkway for long distant rail journeys.
Most journeys were for work, with the majority of users aged between 45 and 64.
The average car journey to the station was just under 20 miles, taking half an hour.
Which tells the statisticians at the PRSD that there isn’t enough effective public transport around for people to need to get to Tiverton Parkway to begin their journey, and that only those over 45 can afford to live so far away from work – or indeed have jobs (it’s an inexact science).
Apparently, Tiverton Parkway is liked for its small and local feel created by its location in Devon’s rural countryside and the friendliness of staff.
The report makes recommendations about how to support an increasing demand for rail travel from Parkway but without increasing the number of cars accessing the site.
