Too honest, or too old? Totnes Tory MP to stand down at next election

Totnes Tory MP Anthony Steen, who has been caught up in the expenses row, told the BBC that he had been ‘too honest’ in claiming expenses to protect his trees from rabbits, and when asked if his trees being protected from rabbits means he could do his job as an MP, he told the Western Morning News: “Of course it doesn’t. Until the Telegraph launched the campaign, none of us knew what the rules were.” Meh. But it seems he will be missed.

One denizen of Anthony’s Totnes constituency, RSR108, said on Twitter: “He was ok.

“He helped a few groups around Totnes. The Tibet support Gp, Chinese medicine v EU stuff like that.”

Tory leader David Cameron responded to the news of Anthony’s decision by saying he “never lost the desire and ability to fight for the underdog”, obviously overlooking the issue with the rabbits.

But like many septegenarians (or near as can be – he’s 69 at the moment, according to the Western Morning News), maybe it’s time to step down from his parliamentary career.

He’s held the Totnes seat for 26 years and been in Parliament for 36 years (which means he’d got the wherewithall to buy a £1 million mansion from a first career that ended when he was 33… perhaps? Or do MPs have more than one job?).

But the question remains – should MPs retire at a certain age?

He's a money grabbing idiot. Don't forget he's the one who parked in a wheelchair bay at his local train station (for a weekend I believe) then when fined for it said there were too many spaces for the "handicapped" anyway!!! Good riddance.

decency???? caught with his fingers in the till, it's called running away from your responsibilities. Decency would be him paying it all back!

Why not set the retirement age at 65, the same should apply to local/county councillors.
